In qualifying on Saturday, Carlos Sainz set the fastest time in weights at the British Grand Prix, earning him his first career pole position in his 150th appearance.
Late in the third qualifying session, Sainz clocked a fastest time of 1 minute 40.983 seconds, trailing defending Formula One champion Max Verstappen by just 072 seconds.
Although Sainz's colleague Charles Leclerc started on pole before Sainz's unexpected jump, it was Ferrari's eighth pole position in 10 races this season.
On the radio, Sainz told his team, "I didn't expect it."
Sergio Perez will start in second Red Bull, and Leclerc will start in third.
Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton qualified for his home race in sixth place as Mercedes progressed with his high-speed bouncing issues. Teammate George Russell came in ninth.
